What's On - 23 February 2022

A reminder to all families that Tuesday 1 March 2022 is a non-school day for all of our Junior and Senior School students at the College due to Moderation Day. 

This Semester, we are launching our Junior School Debating with a lunchtime meeting for all Year 6 boys who may be interested in joining our Debating Team.

If you are interested in Debating or Public Speaking, please join Mr Pezzella and Mrs Hogan in the Junior School Hall on Monday 28 February at the beginning of lunch.

Details surrounding competitions are still being drafted, and more information will become available when these are published.

Athletics Carnival

The Junior School Athletics Carnival will be held onsite on Wednesday 2 March. This is a students and staff event only. Students are to wear their House coloured shirt and College sports shorts and socks. Please also remember to wear your hat, sunscreen and to bring a water bottle.

ACT Swimming

ACT Swimming nomination forms for interested boys are available from Mr Galvin or the Junior School Office. The return slip, indicating events boys wish to be considered for at the ACT level, must be back to the College no later than Friday 25 February. Regular announcements regarding this have been made at school.

Matt Giteau Cup

The annual Matt Giteau Cup will be held mid Term Two. More information for interested rugby players will be sent home closer to the date.

Junior School PE Update

This term, all Junior School PE classes have focussed on various athletics skills including Shot, Discus and Long Jump.

Boys who missed any athletics lessons will have the opportunity to trial and have results recorded at lunchtimes. Boys are to listen carefully to the daily announcements.

From Weeks 6-10, classes will learn and develop the finer points of Touch Football as well as playing games of Touch.

The Marist College Canberra Careers Facebook page is where up-to-date information is added about job opportunities, gap year placements, university applications, changes to deadlines for university, tips for applications and preferences.

I would encourage all Year 10-12 students and parents to be following the page, and especially encourage our Year 12 students and their parents to do so to receive the most current information regarding their options for 2023.

This year’s Marist College Canberra Foundation Golf Day will take place on Monday 4 April 2022 at Royal Canberra Golf Club.

Open to all level of golfers, we are looking forward to a fantastic day of golf!

The main purpose of the Day is to raise funds and awareness for the Br Mark May Bursary Fund. The Fund assists students within our community who would otherwise not have the opportunity to receive a Marist education.

The Grandmothers’ and Mothers’ Afternoon Tea is being held on Thursday 31 March 2022.

Term 1 - First Reconciliation:

• Sacramental Celebration - commences Saturday 26 March from 4.30pm

Term 2 – Confirmation

• Parent Information Night - Tuesday 3 May 2022 at 6.00pm via Zoom
• Sacramental Celebration - Tuesday 21 June and Wednesday 22 June at 6.00pm

Term 3 - First Eucharist

• Parent Information Night - Tuesday 26 July 2022 at 6.00pm via Zoom
• Sacramental Celebration – Saturday 17 September - Sunday 18 September 2022. 

If you have any enquiries regarding these Sacraments, please contact the Parish Office. 

• Session 3 of First Reconciliation at Mary Help of Christians Parish will be held on Wednesday 2 March and Session 4 will be held on Wednesday 9 March. Both start at 6.30pm and will be held in the Church.  
• Next Wednesday, 2 March, is Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday Masses with ash distribution will be held at 7.30am and 5.30pm in the Church. All are welcome to attend either of these Masses.

Online registration for Marist Winter Sporting Clubs are closing this week.

Please check Club websites prior to registration for more information. Parents need to ensure that their child/children are registered by the closing date of the registration period to ensure participation in that sport.

When considering registering, there are a couple of points which all students need to be aware of:

1. Students currently representing the College in cricket or rowing: You must continue to honour that training and playing commitment even if there may be an overlap with the pre-season training of your chosen winter sport. Your first priority is to your summer team. In doing this you will not be disadvantaged in your winter sport selections.
2. When choosing a winter sport, remember that you are expected to attend all training sessions and all games during the season. In doing so, you are supporting your coach and your team mates.
3. College Sporting teams play in an age-based competition. All boys are registered to play in their appropriate age level. The College endeavours to ensure that we maximise the participation levels during competition which may require the movement of students up an age group. The College and clubs work together to ensure if the need for this happens, it is managed appropriately. 

Premier League (Football) exemption forms

Students who are considering playing for a local Premier League Football Club need to complete the Exemption form which is found on the Marist Football Club website.

There were some great individual achievements during the last round:

• Ansh Tiwary, First XI, 142 not out against Tuggeranong, and 
• Will Hyson, Stage 3 Saturday Gold, 6/14 against Ginninderra Tigers. 

Basketball ACT held the Summer Under 14 boys competition during January and February this year. An all-Marist team entered the competition and made it to the Grand Final which was played on Sunday 20 February.

The Grand Final was a nail-biting event with the final score 38 to 31, with the Marist boys defeating the Western Creek Dodgers.
