Ω The Omega 2022 Fourteenth Edition

Year Twelve Students and Parents,

Editing of the 2022 edition of the Senior Yearbook, The Omega, is now well underway!

What is The Omega and why do I need one? The Omega is the Year 12 Yearbook. Each Year 12 student has been invited to contribute to the publication. The Omega 2022 features individual student profiles, formal and informal photographs, farewell messages, graduation speeches and the major award recipients.

How do I order one? The Omega is available by pre-order only, which you will be able to do on Graduation Day in the Quadrangle before and after the Graduation Assembly. The Omega is an optional purchase and is $25 per copy.

When is The Omega available? It will be available for collection from the College on Wednesday 14 December 2022 when the Senior Certificates and Blue and Blue are collected.

What do I need to remember? Only pre-orders are available. No additional copies are ordered. Pre-ordered copies can be collected on Wednesday 14 December 2022.

Dear Members of the Marist Community,

Aid to the Church in Need and Archbishop Christopher invite you to The Night of the Witnesses. This will be an inspirational night honouring recent Christian martyrs and praying for those who suffer religious persecution around the world. 

Date: Wednesday 23 November 
Time: 7.00pm 
Location: St Christopher's Cathedral, Manuka 

The Night of the Witnesses is an evening of testimony, music, and prayer, with the aim of giving thanks for our brothers and sisters who have given their life for Christ, and to pray for those still suffering for faith. The Night of the Witnesses is an initiative of Aid to the Church in Need and has been celebrated for the past 15 years in Paris, London, Madrid, and Washington. This is the first time it will be held in Australia.        

Supper will be served afterwards.

Year 12 Students studying in Melbourne in 2023

Thinking about accommodation for tertiary studies in Melbourne? Marist House Fitzroy offers student residential programs for young adults, studying at one of the many tertiary institutes in and around Melbourne.

Marist House provides 'a home away from home' that is supportive, welcoming and hospitable for students who desire to belong to a caring community while completing their studies in Melbourne. 

Marists have a long tradition in building community around young people to promote their education and full human growth.

This program is an opportunity for students and their families to deepen their Catholic faith through the reception of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, First Holy Communion or Confirmation). It is open to students who are considering one or all of these Sacraments and are from Years 7-12. Sisters of these students are welcome to also partake in the program and receive the sacraments as a family.

The actual design of the program will be partially dependent on the needs of the candidates yet will involve a mix of twilight sessions for the family and weekly sessions for the students. These will mostly be held here at the College. Priests from the local parishes will also be involved in various sessions and families will need to connect with their parish. The Sacraments will be received within each student’s local parish in and around Pentecost on 28 May 2023.

Students require a robust music education to optimally achieve their physical, emotional and cognitive potential as holistic learners who are sensitive to the needs of others.

Students at our College have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument through our Private Instrumental and Vocal lesson program in 2023.

People who study music:

• Work hard together as a team to perfect their rehearsals and performances
• Learn to become more comfortable with being openly expressive
• Communicate across languages and cultures through shared practical experiences 

Our aim is to encourage maximum participation in our community for children at all levels of ability, and to instill a culture of growth, attention to detail, focus and self-discipline.

Conditions of entry:

•  All works must be created in the current year (2022)
•  Works must be original and accompanied by a signed statement of authenticity
•  Large works maybe submitted but are not guaranteed display (available space will determine if your work is displayed)
•  All works must be display ready – please consult an art teacher if you are unsure
• After the exhibition closes, work is to be collected by Friday 25th November from the Art Department
• Entries are due by Monday 8 November

Submissions can be in any media - digital, video, photography and traditional art media are welcome. A single submission is preferred but consult with art staff if you would like to enter multiple works.

Complete an entry form and submit your work by bringing it to the Art Department.

All 2D artworks must be clearly labelled (on the reverse) with your name, year level and House Group. For digital files - request the link to OneDrive via the Visual Art Department, and clearly label with your name (use your name on the file submission). Printing of digital works may be possible and arranged through consultation with Art Department Staff before entry.

Parents are invited to attend Teen vaping: An update for parents, a webinar organised by Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia (DARTA) and presented by Paul Dillon. The event will be hosted on Zoom and the session will examine what we currently know about the use of e-cigarettes and vaping amongst Australian school-based young people.

Judo Australian School Championships 

Hayden O'Mara (Year 4) and Tom Cramp (Year 11) both travelled to the Gold Coast in September to represent Marist College Canberra in the 2022 Judo Australian School Championships. The national championships consisted of over 150 students representing their schools. Hayden and Tom were both awarded Bronze Medals in their respective divisions. 

A huge congratulations to both athletes on their outstanding performances!

Nepean Open Water Swimming Meet 

Congratulations to two Marist students who both performed very well at the Nepean open water swimming meet held earlier this month in Penrith! Marcus Smith (Year 6) received a Bronze medal in 11yrs 1km (15.43) and George Salter (Year 5) received a Bronze medal in 11yrs 2.5km (41.02).

National Ice Hockey Tournament

Congratulations to Henry York (Year 11) who has been selected to play in the National Ice Hockey Tournament for NSW in Newcastle later this month. We wish Henry all the best in the tournament. 

The sun (and wind) came out to allow a weekend’s cricket to be played.  The grass might have been long at most grounds, but the Marist boys made the most of the chance to play.

Congratulations to Marcus Sykes (Stage 3 Saturday Gold) who took five wickets (5/7) against Daramalan.
