Student Recap - Term 3 Fundraising and Social Events
Throughout Term 3, Marist College students participated in a range of fundraising and social events with peers from Canberra Girls Grammar School and Merici College. Here, our 2022 College Service Captain Michael Keating provides a recap of four of these highly successful events.
Marist and CGGS Trivia Afternoon
On Wednesday 17th of August, the College held an inaugural Trivia Afternoon for Year 9 students from both Marist and Canberra Girls Grammar.
Passion was running high as over 180 participants across 20 teams battled it out to prove themselves as true masters of trivia. There were several rounds testing a variety of knowledge including history, television and film, music, general knowledge and much more!!
Beyond just the entertainment of the trivia, the event had a specific focus on supporting charity. The theme of the night was to come dressed in OpShop clothing in support of local charities across Canberra. In addition, all funds raised from the event were put towards the College Walkathon Appeal, supporting causes such as the Br Mark May Bursary Fund and the Trinity College Lismore Flood Appeal.
Thank you to all of the passionate Year 9 participants from Marist and Girls Grammar, along with the College Leaders and teachers from both schools for creating a fun and successful event.
Marist and CGGS Social and Disco
After several years of COVID shutting down inter-school social events, Marist students from Years 7, 8 and 10 had the pleasure of being able to attend two separate social events generously hosted by Canberra Girls Grammar School.
On the evening of the 1st of June, Marist boys and Canberra Girls Grammar girls from Years 7 and 8 nervously arrived for the much-anticipated disco. After waving goodbye to their parents, the boys and girls made their way to the CGGS Hall. As the students came in, senior Marist and CGGS students ensured that the attendees handed over their mobile phones. It was a great night of music and entertainment, with many of the boys and girls forming new friendships. The lack of mobile phones meant that many boys and girls left with each other's phone numbers written on their arms. It was a brilliant night and a great start to the year's interschool social event calendar.
The Year 10 disco on the 31st of August was another much-anticipated highlight of 2022’s interschool social calendar. Also hosted in the CGGS hall, boys and girls from both schools were treated to a night of music, dancing, and food. It was an opportunity to catch up for some students and for others it was a good chance to make some new friends from outside of their school.
Funds raised from both events supported Focus ACT, a disability support Charity which CGGS has been fundraising for this year.
Thank you very much to Canberra Girls Grammar School for hosting the two wonderful events. Special thanks to Marist and CGGS staff members for organising and supporting the events and also to Marist and CGGS student leaders for chaperoning at both events.
Marist and Merici Inter-house Charity Movie Night
On Wednesday August 31, McMahon house hosted an inter-house charity movie night, attended by students of all ages with their sister Merici House Seiwa.
Troves of boys and girls ranging from all year levels from McMahon and Seiwa house assembled at Marist to share a movie night for the ages. “What was the communally agreed upon flick???” you might be asking yourself, well it was Minions: Rise of Gru of course! Once all were settled, a few icebreakers and activities were completed to get everyone friendly and flowing. Each ticket gave access to the Marist Captain-led candy bar, with students each offered a packet of chips, a soft drink and a chocolate. Beautifully complementing the movie snacks was a delightful bake sale whipped up by the Seiwa girls. These sweet goodies were selling fast and provided the ideal method to get to everyone’s charitable pockets.
The night raised $480 and all proceeds generated from the night’s tickets and bake sale were split evenly between McMahon and Seiwa’s house charities: the Legacy Foundation and the Sisters of the Good Samaritan respectively. It was an amazing night for all involved, and a fantastic rekindling of the inter-school events since their unfortunate interruptions in previous years. Here’s to many more enjoyable inter-house events!
Marist and Merici Inter-house Trivia and Games Afternoon
On Friday the 26th of August Year 7 students from Darlinghurst and Tullow house from Merici got together for a trivia and games afternoon. The afternoon consisted of a scavenger hunt around the school and then a session of team building games before wrapping it all up with a sausage sizzle. The event went really well and the boys in this space felt comfortable around the girls and were able to build new friendships. Moving forward Darlo and Tullow houses are planning bigger and better events with the continuation of this great relationship predicted to continue in Term Four.
