2010 Lenten Appeal

The beginning of Term 2 marks the close of our MAPS 2010 College Lenten Appeal. The weeks of Lent saw vigorous fundraising conducted by the school leaders in both the Senior and Junior schools. This year’s Lenten Appeal saw the captains try something different with the establishment of the inaugural “D Week” in which a different exciting fundraising activity was held each day. We would like to thank all boys for their whole-hearted participation in events such as ‘Sumo Sizzle’, the Poker Night, and the new ‘Royal Marist Show’.

We are proud to say that, as a College community, we raised a total of roughly $17,150, with some money still yet to come in. What is particularly impressive is that around $5100 of this total was received directly from Marist families via our new Online Donation Account. This amount is the highest contribution we have ever had from families. On behalf of the College, I would like to sincerely thank you for your generosity. All the money donated will go directly to important developmental projects run by Marist Asia Pacific Solidarity in South-East Asia, such as building much needed water tanks across the Gizo region of the Solomon Islands.

Perhaps the best aspect of this year’s Lenten Appeal was not only the impressive total, but the general attitude that both families, staff
and students adopted towards fundraising and getting involved in the activities. Lunchtime fundraising events such as the ‘Royal Marist Show’ had a fantastic spirited and community atmosphere about them. Students and staff were eager to participate in the ‘Mi Goreng’ eating competitions, the shaving cream pie throwing at the captains (some enjoying this more than others!!), the bake-sales and the face painting. Essentially, it is this spirit of community-building donation and ‘giving for the sake of giving’ that Lent is all about. I think that everybody is to be congratulated for their lively participation.

Once again, thank you for your charitable donations during Lent. Because of your generosity and efforts we can now drastically change the lives of some of the world’s most needy people.
